Thyroid Biopsy by a Surgeon Who Knows Exactly What It Means

Most biopsies are done at imaging centers by radiologists who report results and walk away. Dr. Parikh is a thyroid surgeon who performs your biopsy, explains what it means for your specific situation, and guides every next step — all in a single visit, at a fraction of the hospital cost.

Why Choose Dr. Parikh

Three Reasons This Is the Right Place for Your Thyroid Biopsy

Not all biopsies are created equal. Where you get yours — and who performs it — shapes what happens next.

A Surgeon's Interpretation

Dr. Parikh specializes in both thyroid surgery and non-surgical treatment (RFA). When he reads your biopsy result, he understands the full clinical picture — not just whether cells look abnormal, but what that means for surgery, RFA eligibility, or watchful waiting. Most radiologists can't do that.

Significant Cost Savings

Hospital and imaging center biopsies carry facility fees on top of physician fees — costs that can multiply quickly. In-office biopsy with Dr. Parikh eliminates the facility fee entirely. Same expert care, meaningfully lower out-of-pocket cost.

No need to book a consultation, then wait weeks for a procedure appointment. Come in, meet Dr. Parikh, review your imaging together, and — if appropriate — get your biopsy done the same day. One visit. One expert. Everything in one place.

Who Should Consider a Thyroid Biopsy?

A thyroid biopsy (fine needle aspiration, or FNA) is a quick, minimally invasive way to evaluate a thyroid nodule. Your doctor or radiologist may recommend one if:

A nodule was found on imaging

Ultrasound, CT, or MRI identified a thyroid nodule that warrants further evaluation.

The nodule meets size criteria

Typically ≥1 cm or smaller with suspicious ultrasound features per ACR or ATA guidelines.

Suspicious ultrasound characteristics

Irregular margins, microcalcifications, abnormal vascularity, or other high-risk features on ultrasound.

Growing nodule on follow-up

A nodule previously monitored that has grown significantly since the last scan.

Family or personal history of thyroid cancer

Elevated risk due to personal or first-degree family history of thyroid malignancy.

About Dr. Parikh

Why a Thyroid Surgeon Makes All the Difference

When a radiologist biopsies your nodule, they send results to your referring doctor and move on. There's no continuity, no context, and no clinical relationship to guide what comes next.

Full-Spectrum Expertise

Dr. Parikh performs both thyroid surgery and RFA. He interprets your biopsy knowing exactly what surgical or non-surgical treatment you'd be eligible for.

Longitudinal Relationship

He is your doctor before, during, and after the biopsy. If results require action, you already have a treatment relationship — no starting over.

Immediate Clinical Guidance

When results come back, Dr. Parikh explains what they mean for your specific anatomy, risk profile, and goals — not just a generic "follow up with your doctor."

FACS-Credentialed with Extensive Biopsy Experience

Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Over 5,000 thyroid biopsies performed. Zero major complications from thyroid nodule biopsy to date.

FAQ

Common Questions About Thyroid Biopsy

Answers to the questions we hear most often.

Most patients describe mild discomfort — similar to a blood draw. We use a very fine needle, and the procedure typically takes 10–15 minutes. No sedation is required. You can drive yourself home and resume normal activity the same day.

A referral is not required to schedule with Dr. Parikh. However, you should bring any prior thyroid ultrasound reports or images from your primary care physician or endocrinologist. We will coordinate with your referring physician after the visit.

Cytology results are typically returned within 7–14 days. Dr. Parikh will personally contact you to discuss findings and what they mean for your care plan. You will never just receive a lab report with no context.

Hospital and imaging center biopsies carry a facility fee charged by the institution — separate from the physician fee. When Dr. Parikh performs your biopsy in our office, there is no facility fee. The same expert care costs significantly less out of pocket.

Because Dr. Parikh performs both thyroid surgery and non-surgical treatment options, he can discuss all your options directly — not send you back to a primary care doctor to start over with a new specialist. You already have a treatment relationship with the right doctor.

Yes. If after reviewing your history and imaging Dr. Parikh determines biopsy is appropriate, it can typically be performed the same day. This eliminates the common experience of a separate biopsy referral and weeks of additional waiting.

Please bring any prior thyroid ultrasound reports, your insurance card, a list of current medications (especially blood thinners), and any referral paperwork from your referring physician. Comfortable, loose clothing around the collar area is recommended.
